The necessity of such an educational institution arose much earlier, but the absence of the state authority has hindered from its creation. It has become possible to create a higher musical education institution in Armenia only after getting the independence. At that time, all the necessary prerequisites for that already existed.

The core of the library - the collection of about 20 000 units of scores and literature - is a gift by the famous conductor Prof. Konstantin Sarajev (1877-1954). This collection includes also the rare publications of XIX century and 1900ths. Today the library is named after K. Sarajev.

At present, the library fund covers a great number of units. There is also an archive and personal collections based on the donations by different private persons.

One of the most valuable collections of the library is, of course, the music by Armenian composers, represented much more widely than in any other library.

All the units of the library are included in the card index.

In 2002-03, the library was repaired in order to create the more sufficient conditions to its use.
